BIO

Andrés Villaseñor is a filmmaker known for crafting stories that leave an impact. His most recent work, Good Intentions, a raw, empathetic documentary, won the Best International Short Documentary Award at Atlanta DocuFest 2021. It went on to conquer festivals worldwide, earning official selections and special screenings in places like Oslo, Poland, Belgium, and Sheffield DocFest in 2022. Not bad for a guy who spent his youth skipping school to watch movies at the local cinema.

Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, Andrés is shaped by his Mexican roots and Spanish heritage. After honing his craft in the UK for six years, working in every corner of filmmaking, he now calls Mallorca, Spain home. This mix of cultures—Mexican, British, and Spanish—infuses his work with a unique global perspective that reflects in every frame.

Andrés’s journey began in his teens when he studied photography and screenwriting. His first photography exhibit—a black-and-white essay on poverty in the suburbs of Guadalajara—was shown across the state, drawing praise from his peers. But his true passion always lay in the moving image. After winning a screenwriting competition, he received a grant to shoot his first short film, Jimena de Media Noche, which premiered at the Guadalajara International Film Festival.

At 19, Andrés moved to London, a place some call the ultimate “gap year,” but he ended up overstaying by five years. During that time, he immersed himself in filmmaking courses, worked every production job he could find, and lived the hustle, learning as much as possible along the way.

A scholarship followed, and he went on to study Digital Filmmaking and Journalism at SAE Institute, Middlesex University in Shoreditch. Later, he relocated to Mallorca, Spain, where he met his better half and began working as a Casting Director for a globally recognized production company—all while continuing to direct and edit his passion projects, including documentaries and fiction films.

For Andrés, film is more than just entertainment. Whether it’s a feature, documentary, music video, or even an advertisement, it’s a platform—a chance to shift someone’s perspective on the world, open doors, and open minds. That’s the power of the moving image.

One of his favourite quotes from a movie says, “Your heart is free. Have the courage to follow it.”
Braveheart

And when life gets messy, his second favourite quote puts it better: “Fck it, dude. Let’s go bowling.”*
The Big Lebowski
